I attended the one room school house in Delaware in 1942-44. Eula Davis was my 7th grade teacher. Edna Staples of the Alley store was my 8th grade teacher. Ms. Davis was the sister of Mr. Davis, the agriculture teacher in Birch Tree High School. I graduated high school in Birch Tree in 1948. We lived about 2 miles from Delaware off of highway "E" so we were in the Burkhart school district and had to pay tuition to them to attend Delaware school. Mayhans creek ran through the property where we lived. The janitor of the school quit so they offered the job to me. The pay was $3.00 a month. I told them I wouldn't work for that amount so we settled on $5.00 after being approved by Mr.Dave Pummill and Mr.Rader who were on the school board. My dad W.O.(Oscar)Harper went to the original Delaware school building before it burned in the early 1900s. I can't find out what was the last year school was held at Delaware. Birch Tree High School also burned later.
