Humbird was named for Jacob Humbird, born at Ligonier, Pennsylvania in 1811, a well known railroad builder. He built Dom Pedro Secundo Railroad in Brazil 32 miles from Rio de Janeiro. In 1867, he built the main line of the West Wisconsin Railroad from Elroy to Hudson with tracks extended to Humbird in 1869.
