Description 

Erected in 1794-95, the Royal Presidio Chapel of San Carlos de Borromeo is the only remaining presidio chapel in California and the sole existing structure of the original Monterey Presidio. The State church of Spanish California, Royal Spanish Governors worshipped and State ceremonies were held here. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, October 9, 1960
