Description

Founded in 1884, this was one of the first large off-reservation boarding schools for Indian students established by the Federal Government. It served students from the southern Plains and upper Midwest; in 1993, it became Haskell Indian Nations University. Due to the number of modern buildings on campus, the NHL consists of 12 structures and buildings, scattered throughout Haskell Indian Nations University. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, July 4, 1961
