Daughters of the American Revolution Sign

Fort Winnebago was abandoned by the Army inn 1845, just before Wisconsin became a state.

Columbia County used the property for housing during the Great Depression when members of the Daughters of the American Revolution realized the historical value of the property. The DAR began to take steps to acquire the property and preserve it for its historical value.
