Description

In 1797, the year Eager Inn was built, Zane's Trace was more of a trail than a road. Zane used existing Native American trails wherever possible, cutting down trees to create a primitive path. Prior to Ohio's statehood, (1803} Zane's Trace was not accessible by wagon, so narrow and rough that it was only passable on foot or on horseback. It later became an important stage coach stop. During the civil War it was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
