Cream City Brick Administration Building
The building that was listed at 9508 W. Watertown Plank Road might have been the second building affiliated with the Home for Dependent Children (a euphemism for "orphan" apparently) that was demolished sometime in the 1990s. A photo of that building is found above.
It is possible the address of the subject building was changed. This area is under heavy redevelopment at the time of this writing, including a great deal of road work associated with necessary changes to Watertown Plank Road itself. Some of the land was taken for the revised interchange of Watertown Plank Road and US 45, as a part of the Wisconsin DOT rebuilding of the Zoo Interchange.
Pictured building was the Milwaukee County Children's Administration Building located at 9508 Watertown Plank Road, Wauwatosa in the 1970's and early 1980's. It housed my office as well as other related functions. My duties were to discontinue child care services in four "cottages" in a non-secure setting. Child care services were outsourced to private community facilities. Sometime later, the Milwaukee County Parks Department assumed occupancy of the building erected in 1898.
I posted a photograph earlier today. I have attached a second "postcard" image entitled, "Children's Home, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin." Can you tell me something about this building? I don't recall ever having seen it. It seems like a much larger structure than the older building designated as the "The Children's Home..." Thank You Again, Best Regards, Tom Ramstack, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
I have attached a photo of my grandmother, Helen Phillips, of Muskego, posing with a group of young orphans, on what looks like a fairly cold day at the County Home for Dependent Children (circa 1915). I'm attempting to identify the building. Could it be the same building you feature, perhaps taken from the back side? Hope you enjoy this addition to your collection!!! Best Regards, Tom Ramstack, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I can't believe they tore down those beautiful buildings. I stayed there in the 60's
Where are the records on the children that were in the Home for Dependent children kept now ? .. my dad was living here in 1942-1943 ...I have tried researching to locate these records, got the run around between the courthouse & historical society...any leads would be appreciated.
Can you post picture of the front side of the second building? The building appears familiar to where I stayed as a young child.
