Description

Shirley Plantation is the oldest plantation in Virginia (1613) and the oldest family-owned business in North America (1638). There are nine original colonial outbuildings on the property. Completed in 1770, this large, 2-1/2-story brick Georgian building with a double-hipped roof was the birthplace of Anne Hill Carter (b. 1773), mother of Robert E. Lee. The house contains centuries of furnishings and portraits accumulated by the Carters, and important Virginia family. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, April 15, 1970
