Description 

From 1884 to 1916, William Henry Welch was professor of pathology at Johns Hopkins University. During his tenure he transformed American medical research and teaching and became known as the dean of American medical science. He developed areas of investigation such as pathology and bacteriology which became disciplines in their own right. Welch lived here from about 1891 to 1908. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, January 7, 1976
