Description 

On November 28, 1892, oil flowing from this well signaled the beginning of production from the immense Mid-Continent field, which by 1919 produced over half the oil supply for the country and continued to do so well into the late 1930s. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, December 22, 1977
