Wing Family Cemetery

Pond Rd., E side, N of jct. with ME 133, Wayne, Maine

Date listed: 10/16/1991 Additional Documentation Accepted: 1/14/09 At the time of the 1991 registration little was known regarding the history of the Wing Family Cemetery, established in 1867. Since then, the Wayne Historical Society has conducted ongoing research into both the Wing family and the Wing Cemetery. Significant to this effort was the 2002 donation of a collection of letters, account books, deeds, bills and receipts dating between 1837 and 1864 which had been saved by Llewellyn Wing (1817 – 1881) of Maine. Among the papers was a roll marked “Wing Cemetery Record.” Examination of these records, along with the later acquisition of a copy of an undated early blueprint depicting the layout of the cemetery and annotated with the names of family plots and those already interred therein, have yielded a substantial amount of additional information on the history and design of the cemetery. Among this information is the name of the builder, James Norris Wing 91818 – 1899), and circumstantial evidence that suggests the site was designed by Alonzo A. Wing, (1807 – 1893). This additional documentation has been prepared to supplement the previous information on file at the National Register.
