The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, at Holy Hill

The tower on the right side of the photo, that blocks the view of the right side of the shrine, houses elevators to allow easier access to the church. The elevators and obsevation deck were added in 1961. The construction was a mixed blessing - while allowing easier access to the thousands of pilgrims who come here each year, the construction also caused the demolition of a beautiful staircase that led up to the front of the church.
