Presidio Nuestra Senora de Loreto de la Bahia

1 mi. S of Goliad State Park on U.S. 183, Goliad, Texas

Constructed in 1749, this is perhaps the finest example in the country of a Spanish presidio. Spanish soldiers were garrisoned here to protect nearby missions; this post later played an important role in Mexican revolutionary efforts against Spain. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, December 24, 1967
