Description
This famous skyscraper remains New York's most widely recognized architectural symbol, and was for 40 years the "tallest building". Constructed in 1930-31 and beautifully finished in the Art Deco style, it rises one-fifth of a mile high and is an engineering masterpiece supported by an elastic steel skeleton. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, June 24, 1986
