Description

Site of a fierce battle between American militiamen attempting to relieve Fort Stanwix and a combined force of British Loyalists and Indians. Although the American patriot force failed to raise the siege at that time, the unseasoned militia's unwillingness to be beaten ultimately led to the abondonment of the siege and the British threat to the Mohawk Valley. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, November 23, 1962
