Description 

Site of a battle (29 August 1779) that was a result an expedition lead by Maj. Gen. John Sullivan and was the major American military effort of 1779. General George Washington ordered the Sullivan expedition as a counter-offensive against the Iroquois, who, as allies of the British, in 1778 had raided settlements in the Mohawk Valley of New York and in western Pennsylvania. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, November 28, 1972
