This huge marsh provided hunting and fishing to Native Americans and attracted white settlers who went so far as to build a dam in 1846, creating Horicon Lake. The dam was removed in 1869 and the battle over the marsh continued until 1941 when is was declared the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The State of Wisconsin controls the south 10,857 acres, the federal government controls the northern 20,796 acres. Numerous viewing sites are located around the edge of the marsh.
The marsh actually crosses the border, with the northern tip of the marsh located in Fond du Lac County, the bulk of the marsh is in Dodge County.
