Martha Timm and her husband, Carl, farmed southeast of New Hampton, Iowa. On retirement, they moved to New Hampton and Martha began to build a rock garden. The medium was concrete, covered with shards of glass and pottery, and rocks that came from every state in the union.

Reminiscent of other self-taught artisans, the structures are whimsical in nature. Upon her death, civic leaders had the rock garden moved to Mikkelson Park.
