Description

Alfred Lester Slocum, the vice president of the Slocum Straw Works, built this Tudor Revival house in 1931. The Slocum Straw Works manufactured ladies' straw and felt hats from 1873 to 1956. Slocum's wife was Gertrude E. Smith, daughter of the founder of the A.O. Smith Corporation. The walls of this house are 14 inches thick. Ash timbers, salvaged from barns, were used for the half-timbering and add to the illusion of the house being older than it actually is.
