this route was used to communicate and transport weapons and supply's for the army camps at fort roots, camp Robinson and fort smith military forts, it was replaced by the rail road in 1872 and another rail road S of the Arkansas river. It was used in conjunction with the Arkansas river many times the river was not navigable.
Also the route would tend to change according the the weather, if it was dry and the bottoms around Round mountain were hard thats where the route went, during wet weather the route stayed on the high ground.
