Architect Lewis P. Hobart designed this French Gothic style cathedral to replace the previous church which was destroyed in the fire that followed the earthquake of 1906. The site was donated by William H. Crocker who's mansion occupied it prior to the tremor. Ground was broken for the cathedral in 1928 and construction completed in 1964.

Noteworthy features include, the main entrance doors replicating Lorenzo Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise for the Florence Baptistery and murals by Jan Henryk de Rosen. The floor plan is modeled after the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres.
