602 foot high curved concrete gravity dam across the Sacramento River built by Pacific Constructors Inc. for the U.S. Bureau Reclamation.
Groundbreaking and official naming ceremony of Shasta Dam occurred on September 12, 1937. Construction of the diversion canal began in November, 1938. Work on the main structure began with the first concrete pour being made in July, 1940. The last bucket of concrete was poured on January 2, 1945. Shasta was the second highest dam in the world and the second largest concrete structure by volume at completion.
