The Union Steam Baths were opened in 1928. They were one of three public saunas operated by Finnish immigrant Kaarlo Koskelo. There were eight private steam rooms and a large male only communal steam room all of which were equipped with marble benches. Unlike the more common dry saunas, the Union Steam Baths rely on steam generated by pulling a cord to spill water on to the hot pipes running through the tiled rooms. The baths were popular with fishermen and cannery workers eager to cleanse themselves of the odor of fish.
