This 11,000 sq. ft. Neo-Classical style mansion was built in 1906 for Butte department store magnate and state senator Daniel J. Hennessy. Hennessy was born in Canada in 1854 and he moved to Montana in 1879 where he settled in Butte and worked for the E.L. Bonner and Co. In 1886 he opened his own store which became the most complete department store in the northwest, and operated in close conjunction with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. With 17 departments and 300 employees, the six-story building at Main and Granite Streets carried a wealth of inventory including groceries, furniture, apparel, carpet and home decor. Hennessy died unexpectedly in his mid-50s in 1908. Among the earliest visitors to the mansion was Admiral George Dewey, hero of the Spanish-American War
