Union veterans of the Civil War organized Abraham Lincoln Post No.4 of the Grand Army of the Republic in 1881. It continued until its last member died in 1923. A large cannon was placed in Pioneer Park on Memorial Day, 1905 in their honor. One side of the pedestal is inscribed, "The gratitude of one's country is the greatest reward its defender can receive." The other side reads, "This pedestal erected by the City of Walla Walla and dedicated May 30th A.D. 1905 to the memory of members of A. Lincoln Post No 4 G A R".
