Maximilian Vogt died in 1911, he left in his will $5,000 for a fountain "to serve man and beast." The stone came from a quarry in Barre, Vermont and was chiseled by Frank Watts of the Watts Marble Works. The fountain was originally erected at 3rd and Washington Streets. Increased traffic eventually required that the fountain be removed, and it was stored until it was restored it in 1966 and placed in Sorosis Park.
