The Alaska Way Viaduct is an 11,088' (2.2 mile) long, double decked, elevated freeway carrying WA-99 between Marginal Way and the Battery Street Tunnel in Seattle. Construction began in 1949 and the road opened on April 4, 1953. The viaduct was closed to traffic at 10:00 p.m. PST, January 11, 2019. A replacement tunnel will open on February 4, 2019. Demolition and removal of the viaduct is expected to be complete by 2023.
