This 135 foot tall sandstone obelisk was erected to commemorate the victory of American forces under the command of Commodore Thomas MacDonough over the British at the Battle of Plattsburgh Bay on September 11, 1814. This was the final naval engagement in the War of 1812. Though intended to commemorate the centennial of the battlle due to the U.S. involvement in World War I, the monument wasn't completed until 1926 and was dedicated on August 18th of that year.
