The monument was built to honor the 644 men from the Town of Queensbury (of which Glens Falls was a part prior to 1908) who served in the Civil War from 1861-65, including the 95 who lost their lives. The sandstone column is topped by a soaring eagle sculpted by John Townsend of South Britain, Connecticut and was constructed in 1868 by R.T. Baxter at cost a total of $12,000 and was officially dedicated in May 1872.
