The Ginkgo Petrified Forest contains thousands of logs petrified in lava flows containing an unusually large number of tree species. Logs of the ginkgo tree, rarely found as fossil wood, are located here. Considered one of the most diverse fossil forests in North America, Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park is famous for the rare specimens of petrified Ginkgo tree discovered there in 1932. The 7,124-acre park was designated a National Natural Landmark by the US National Park Service in 1965.
