Washington Square Park is one of three city blocks set off as public squares by John W. Geary in 1850. The park is home to historically significant public art; a granite block placed in 1869 as a United States Coast and Geodetic Survey Station; a statue of Ben Franklin (originally erected on Market Street in 1879 and moved here in 1904), and a memorial honoring the Volunteer Fire Department of 1849-1866 donated by Lillie Hitchcock Coit in 1933.
