This is one of 13 such monuments placed along the route of the 624 mile military road constructed under the direction of Captain John Mullan between 1859 and 1861 to connect Fort Walla Walla near the Columbia with Fort Benton on the Missouri. The inscription on this one reads, "Erected under the auspices of the Montana Society of Pioneers. Contributed by the son and daughters of Captain John H. Mills of Deer Lodge City in honor of their father's intimacy and friendship with and for Captain John Mullan road builder and frontiersman. Deer Lodge City - 1916"
