Nicholas Johannes House

36 S Davis Street, Helena, MT

"The residence that stood on this lot prior to the 1880s was likely central to remodelings and additions made between 1882 and 1890 during the South-Central neighborhood’s building boom. Nicholas Johannes, a German immigrant and carpenter by trade, purchased the home in 1882 and displayed his skill by twice expanding its basic rectangle to form a “T.” An open porch originally spanned the front, and a later porch extension (now enclosed) wrapped around the south side. Although the two-story frame home is now clad in stucco, its gable-front roof, simple cornice, and lovely front door recall the home’s nineteenth-century origins." - NRHP/Montana Historical Society plaque
