A Peek Inside "Old Main" Before Restoration Begins

One of the last bills that President Abraham Lincoln signed into law was an act creating three "Old Soldiers Homes" to take care of disabled Civil War veterans. It was the beginning of the VA, and one of those three was the Northwestern Branch built in Wood, Wisconsin, just outside Milwaukee.

Old Main, a favorite landmark in the Milwaukee area, opened in 1869 and today, is in deplorable shape. Fundraising to save Old Main continues, with plans to convert the grand dame into 80 units of housing.

Milwaukee Independent published a virtual reality 360 walk through of Old Main along with an array of still photos, posted by Lee Matz. Follow the link to see the pre-restoration conditions of this once magnificent structure.
