Historic Detroit Building to be Demolished for a Parking Lot

Curbed Detroit and other sources are reporting that a historical building is facing demolition to provide 12 parking spaces for a luxury condominium project. The Detroit Saturday Night Building (550 W. Fort Street) failed to receive historic status with the Detroit City Council on October 1, 2019.

The building was constructed in 1914 to house the offices of the Detroit Saturday Night newspaper. (The paper was published from 1907 to 1939.) The building was designed by the Detroit firm of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls (today the Smith Group.) The red brick building features several glazed terra cotta and stone decorative elements.

Preservationists are fighting the decision but the fate of the building appears to be sealed.
