Edward Durell Stone (1902-1978) was one of American most enigmatic modern architects. After developing a reputation as one ofthe masters ofthe "new" European modernism with his pristine International style designs of the 1930s, Stone's ideas about architecture continued to evolve until his mature work was characterized with an almost lush expressiveness at odds with his earliest work. http://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/pdfs/13001157.pdf
