Description

The J. H. Hawes Elevator is located in the small town of Atlanta, Logan County, Illinois. Built in 1904, it is an excellent surviving example of a heavy-timber stud-constructed country elevator. Stud-constructed or studded refers to the framing of the bins...John Hardin Hawes (1847-1938) was a grain dealer who in partnership with Jeremiah Miller purchased an elevator in 1881. After years of handling grain and coal, Hawes was well aware of elevator design when he hired contractors McIntyre and Wikle to Build his new elevator... -- Historic American Buildings Survey
