Leonard Bond Chapman House, Additional Documentation; Date listed: 10/4/2006. NRHP #80000228.

In 1980 the Leonard Bond Chapman House in Portland Maine was placed in the National Register for its architectural significance, and for its association with Chapman, a nurseryman, newspaper editor and historian who concentrated on the history of Portland and the surrounding area. The house that he erected between 1866 and 1868 is a well-designed and well-preserved example of an Italianate structure with a distinctive porch, tower, and mansard roof. Although the original nomination mentioned the presence of the carriage house, it did not describe this outbuilding, or the adjacent spring house, and neither were counted as contributing resources. The purpose of the present documentation was to update the 1980 nomination with additional documentation on the Carriage House (c. 1866-1868) and Spring House (c. 1866-1868), both of which were also designed in the Italianate style.
