Description
Discovered in 1890, the mine's first shipment of ore occurred in 1892. The mine's production led to the realization that the Mesabi Range possessed the world's largest deposits of iron ore, making Minnesota the Nation's premier supplier of that substance. -- National Historic Landmark statement of significance, November 24, 1968
