Upon its completion in 1925, The Washington Building in downtown Tacoma was hailed as the tallest building in the city and the second tallest building in the Pacific Northwest, only behind Seattle's Smith Tower. After its completion, the Building stood as a testament to the financial security and growing prosperity of the city. Over the years it served as home to a variety of business, including a succession of banks. The Beaux Arts style building was designed by the architectural firm of Doyle & Merriam. ~ Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation
