This Spanish Chestnut tree was spared during highway construction years ago when residents recalled it was planted by an early pioneer. They assumed it was beloved town founder Ezra Meeker. Washington State DOT thus built around it. Research has since shown the actual individual responsible for planting this tree to be the first school teacher in the Puyallup Valley, Emma Carson in 1853.

Future status remains a concern as Washington State DOT is planning to redo the interchange and the bridges to the south, one a rare Turner truss, the last of its kind.
