Most fire towers were built in Wisconsin in the early to mid 20th Century and few are manned anytime other than peak fire seasons. The peak season is in Spring, after snow had melted and before vegetation has taken hold. In normal years, vegetation usually contains enough moisture to retard fires.

The Mosinee Fire Tower is indeed an active tower, or at least it was in my first WIDNR fire season in 2011. I actually got a very nice e-mail and tower operator patch from the operator himself.
