Clarence Shaler was an immensely successful inventor/industrialist in Waupun who took up sculpture in retirement, at the age of 70.
Shaler's sculpture was inspired by his parents' optimism, along with other pioneers, to settle in this area, a wilderness at that time. It was also in memory of his mother's dedication to her family. The sculpture was dedicated in Wilcox Park in 1940.
