Located at mile 738.1 on the Mississippi River, the lock and dam is fifth in the series of 29 dams in the Upper Mississippi River 9 foot navigation project. (The Upper Mississippi River runs from its source to its confluence with the Ohio River.) The lock elevates river traffic 7 feet.

Several of the 29 locks and dams are on the NRHP. This is not one of them.

The dam is 1,619 feet long, a concrete structure with six roller gates and 28 tainter gates. There is an earth embankment 18,000 feet long.

The lock is 110 feet wide and 600 feet long.

The lock and dam was built in 1935. It was refurbished between 1987 and 1998.
